John T. Hogan’s The Tragedy of the Athenian Ideal in Thucydides and Plato assesses the roles of Pericles, Alcibiades, and Nicias in Athens’ defeat in Thucydides’ Peloponnesian War. Comparing Thucydides’ presentation of political leadership with ideas in Plato’s Statesman as well as Laches, Charmides, Meno, Symposium, Republic, Phaedo, Sophist, and Laws, it concludes that Plato and Thucydides reveal Pericles as lacking the political discipline (sophrosune) to plan a successful war against Sparta. Hogan argues that in his presentation of the collapse in the Corcyraean revolution of moral standards in political discourse, Thucydides shows how revolution destroys the morality implied in basic personal and political language. This reveals a general collapse in underlying prudential measurements needed for sound moral judgment. Furthermore, Hogan argues that the Statesman’s outline of the political leader serves as a paradigm for understanding the weaknesses of Pericles, Alcibiades, and Nicias in terms that parallel Thucydides’ direct and implied conclusions, which in Pericles’ case he highlights with dramatic irony. Hogan shows that Pericles failed both to develop a sufficiently robust practice of Athenian democratic rule and to set up a viable system for succession.

Nico hubiera sido, sin duda, un gran actor. Sus ojos de águila me midieron de arriba abajo, y después sonrió. La sonrisa era el arma secreta de Nico. Sonrió ampliamente, dejando al descubierto su dentadura postiza. Saqué una moneda y se la ofrecí. La miró primero, casi con repugnancia, y después, sin apresurarse, la cogió. Mejor dicho, se dignó aceptarla. Porque no parecía sino que me hacía un gran favor con rebajarse a aceptar mi limosna.

Este relato de realismo social es la consecuencia de haber vivido durante veintidós años con jóvenes que presentan el mismo perfil que el protagonista.

Durante mi experiencia como terapeuta rehabilitador, he tenido la oportunidad de compartir, sufrir y gozar los peores y mejores momentos con chicos desarraigados de la sociedad, desorientados, carentes de afecto, cariño y atenciones. En ocasiones marginados por circunstancias muy diversas, y en otras, autoexcluidos porque no han encontrado su identidad, referencia o autoestima.

La historia de Anastasio (Tasio, Anas, Mario...) puede ser tan real como la vida misma. Y si en algún momento presenta el lado amable, el sentido del humor, y deja de ser dura, cruel, amarga, desesperanzadora... se debe a que, como autor, he querido resaltar a pesar de todo, la bondad del personaje y su inmenso corazón. La narración se sirve del lenguaje marginal de la calle. Transcurre en ambientes de bandas orientadas al pillaje, el hurto, la droga y el mal vivir. También hay momentos de generosa sensibilidad, de profunda nobleza, de compañerismo, de amistad, de solidaridad. Cuando Tasio logra formar su propia banda junto a Fede y el Patata (chicos de su misma edad), comienza a detestar las influencias perversas y negativas de las que fue víctima durante el aprendizaje de sus fechorías por parte de otras bandas de jóvenes mayores a los que consideraba sus maestros y protectores. La vida de Tasio se va precipitando en el vacío, cuesta abajo, de mal en peor. El amor, la familia, los amigos... todo se irá desvaneciendo. Quizá al final puede vislumbrarse un cierto halo de esperanza.

El argumento está ambientado en los años setenta.
